Located in Williston, Devil’s Den offers outdoor lovers and divers alike some truly amazing scenery and photo opportunities. Devil’s Den features an underground spring inside a dry cave. This cave is not just a little hole in the ground as it appears from the outside. As you descend the steps down to the diving and snorkeling platform, you will see stalactites hanging from the cathedral ceiling like icicles in this huge cavern. These have been formed over millions of years from dripping water leaving limestone deposits. Just like all the springs here in Florida, the water temperature in Devil’s Den is a year round 72 degrees which makes it perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving all year round. Under the water are incredible rock formations and a fossil bed over 33 million years old giving you a looking glass back to prehistoric times. Many fossils and remains of extinct animals dating back to the Pleistocene Age (2 million – 10,000 years ago) have been found at Devil’s Den including the remains of early man dating back to 75,000 BC.

On colder mornings, steam rises from the cave’s chimney (which appears to be just a hole in the ground from the outside) like plumes of smoke led many early settlers to believe that Devil’s Den was a gateway to hell and how it received its name.

Devil’s Den also has a beautiful lake lined with trails and piers. Bring some bread or fish food with you and watch the giant catfish emerge from the depths to feed. Some of these catfish exceed 3 feet long. There are also many species of birds and beautiful plants and flowers to see as well.

Devil’s Den is a great destination for a daytrip or a weekend getaway. They offer camp sites with or without electric and water hookups, RV parking, and they also offer cabins and trailer rentals for those of us who like to camp but don’t like to rough it. Covered and open picnic areas are available as well. There is a full service dive shop with equipment rental available. Devil’s Den is located at 5390 NE 180th Ave in Williston. You can call them at 352-528-3344 for reservations and pricing. And when you call tell them you heard about Devil’s Den at Gatormagazine.com.

I’ve been there, and it is amazing! Florida has so many wonderful springs… Like Ginny Springs, Poe Springs and Blue Springs right outside Gainesville Florida. My family and I always enjoy a trip to the springs every time we are in the Gainesville area.
